Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.) is a submerged flowering plant. This plant in native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa. In the 1960s, Eurasian watermilfoil was introduced to Vermont and is considered to be an invasive species in lakes and ponds in North America. It is considered to be a noxious weed in lakes like Lake Carmi, as is displaces our native plants that belong in our lake. Milfoil can grow up to 15 feet in length and it can form very dense mats. Besides displacing native aquatic plants, it can have a negative impact on fish populations and other wildlife. Milfoil can spread by means of fragmentation and thus can be spread to other lakes and ponds if plant fragments are attached to boats.
